How to Easily Replace a Lost Social Security Card

If you've lost your social security card, getting a new one isn't very difficult. However, you must have the proper documents and be eligible for a new card. You can only get three replacement cards per year and a total of 10 in your lifetime. If you are ineligible to get a new card, don't worry. Just knowing your social security number should be sufficient in most cases.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your identification. You'll need either a U.S. driver's license, a U.S. non-driver identification card or a U.S. passport to get a replacement card. You must have the original documents -- no photocopies will be accepted. If you do not have one of these documents, check the Social Security Administration's website for a list of acceptable documents.

    • 2

Go to the Social Security Administration's website and print out a SS-5 form. This is the application for a new social security card. Fill it out completely.

    • 3

Take your completed application and documents to your local social security office or your local social security card center to apply for a card. You can also mail these to the Social Security Administration. The SSA will mail your documents, your new card and a receipt back to you within 10 days from the date on the receipt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your new social security card in a safe place when you receive it.

  • Allow 2 to 4 weeks to receive your new card.
