How to Remove Programs From Startup on Windows XP

A computer with a multitude of startup programs may take several minutes to boot up, since its memory is being used by other programs. Some software is programmed to automatically run when the computer starts and must be manually disabled from doing so. To remove startup programs from the Windows XP operating system, you can utilize the Microsoft Configuration utility. This program will list all the programs and services that initiate when your computer starts.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your system's Run utility by clicking on the Start menu button and locating the program. The Run utility should appear on the right-hand side of the menu.

    • 2

Enter "msconfig" into the Run utility to open the Microsoft Configuration tool. Click on the "Startup" tab at the top of the window. This will bring up a list of programs and services that initiate when your computer is turned on.

    • 3

Browse the list of programs to determine which ones you want to remove. Disable programs from starting up when your computer boots by removing the check mark next to the program name.
