Gunslingers may be a thing of the past, but you can pretend to be one with the forehand throw. It's fast and from the hip.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Extend your hand as if to shake hands.

  2. Step 2

Place your index and middle fingers on the inside edge of the disc and your thumb on the outside.

  3. Step 3

Hold the disc parallel to the ground, right side up.

  4. Step 4

Point your feet at an angle, approximately 45 degrees away from your intended target.

  5. Step 5

    Bring your arm back.

  6. Step 6

Bend your wrist so that it's perpendicular to your forearm.

  7. Step 7

Drop your throwing shoulder several inches below your other shoulder.

  8. Step 8

Begin the throw with your elbow leading the way.

  9. Step 9

Flick your wrist with a quick snap so that your middle finger is the last point of contact with the disc.

Tips & Warnings
  • Grip the edge of the disc so the entire disc rests behind your hand.
  • If the disc lands on its side and rolls soon after release, try dropping your throwing shoulder more.
  • There is little rotation from the shoulder in this throw. The power comes from the snap of the wrist.
  • Remember to allow some distance between you and your partner because the disc will leave your hand with a lot of spin and velocity.

on 11/25/2008 Admittedly, Ultimate forehands require a unique throwing stance and angle, because one has to constantly make throws around a defender right in one's face!:-) However, since this article is for the "flying disc" forehand, I'd suggest any student to check out the "Heave H.O.E." DVD,-Basic Instructions for All Flying Disc Students ( http://motodom.com ) for learning even more solid do's (and don'ts!) on forehand throws. Especially if your goal is to throw a Frisbee forehand straight and far. Peace!

on 8/8/2006 If you want to throw it high and accurate, follow through across your chest. This also helps the Frisbee fly farther when you are pulling in Ultimate Frisbee.

on 8/8/2006 Instead of putting your hand out like a hand shake, try making a gun with two fingers being the barrel of the gun and your thumb being the aim. Then grip the disc as said above.
