1
Stencil a short saying or words onto the stairs by taping the stencils to the risers and painting with a stippling brush in a jabbing motion.

2
Paint a runner onto the stairs. Measure from the wall inward, on each step and riser, and pencil in where the runner will be painted. Use blue painter' s tape and poly or paper bags and tape off where you do not want to paint. Use flat paint and a small roller to put a light coat of paint. Let dry and give the runner a second coat. After paint is thoroughly dry, roll on two to three coats of polyurethane. Let dry and carefully remove the painter' s tape.

Wallpaper the stair risers. Prep the wooden stair riser just as you prep the walls for the wallpaper. Ensure that the bottom is straight and the top of the wallpaper, for each riser, rolls under the next step. This helps to keep it securely in place.

Install rail rods to coordinate with your design style of the room. For instance, if you have a Tuscan theme, install wrought iron rods.
