Prepare for Epidural Steroid Injections for Back & Leg Pain

Epidural steroids help reduce the inflammation associated with lower back and leg pain. People that have swelling around the spinal area can experience uncontrolled pain in the lower back that can radiate down the leg. When pain medications and muscle relaxants don't work, the doctor may recommend cortisone (epidural steroids) injections into the spinal area causing the problem. You must correctly prepare for epidural steroid injections for back and leg pain to have the procedure done.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell your doctor if you are taking any medications, especially those thin blood. These medications will have to be stopped seven days before you have the epidural injection. Such medications include anti-inflammatory drugs, ibuprofen, aspirin and blood thinners such as Coumadin.

    • 2

Stop eating and drinking 10 to 12 hours before the epidural is to be given. Most doctors will tell you a specific time to stop eating and drinking, depending on the time of your scheduled appointment.

    • 3

Use a small amount of water if you must take any medications. If your mouth is dry, you can suck on shaved ice chips, but only a few to wet your mouth.

    • 4

Arrive at the center where you will have the procedure done at least an hour before you are scheduled so that the nurse and doctor can prep you. In some cases, an IV is administered beforehand.
