A Right Cross
A Right Cross

With these simple to follow instructions you'll learn the # 1 power punch in boxing, the right cross or as some call it the Right straight. For you lefties this can also be a Left Cross

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start standing with your feet slightly farther than shoulder width apart. If you are right handed step your Left foot forward as if going into a lunge while making sure to keeps the hips square and facing forward.

  2. Step 2

From here slightly bend the knees, and lift the right/rear heel off the ground. From here you should almost be in a sprinter stance.

  3. Step 3
Proper Starting position from the side
Proper Starting position from the side

Now that your legs are in proper position bring your hands up to your cheek bones, bring your elbows in to your ribs, and slightly crunch your abs forward and round your back.

  4. Step 4

From here begin by turning your rear/right foot and hip by pushing off the ground as if you were putting out a cigarette. As your right foot and hip turn relax the shoulder and extend the arm with the power generated by the leg.

  5. Step 5

Continue extending the arm, making sure your arm is going straight out in front of your nose and not off to the side.

  6. Step 6

Once the desired extension is reached. Reverse the process and pull the hand back to the cheek. DO NOT JUST RELAX AND LET THE HAND DROP DOWN TO YOUR KNEES!!! Bring it back to your face. Always remember if you do punch someone they will more than likely try to punch you back so make sure you KEEP THOSE HANDS UP!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you stay nice and relax. Remember the secret is repetition, don't judge yourself to harshly, with something like this I honestly wouldn't count the first 20. Play with the movement and make sure you feel it through your entire body. The more comfortable you are with the movements the easier they will become.
  • Be careful if you're doing this in the air, don't try to "snap" your arm/elbow to many times in the air especially if you have preexisting shoulder issues. Take it slow and work on driving off the ground.
