Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a condition characterized by a painful burning sensation that occurs in the upper portion of the stomach. A person with this condition may feel extremely full after eating small quantities of food, may feel bloated after eating or may become nauseous. Although indigestion can cause a lot of discomfort, it is not a serious condition. In many cases, people can successfully treat their symptoms by making some changes in their daily lives.

How to Relieve Bloating and Indigestion

  1. Step 1

Adopt healthy eating habits. Take your time eating and completely chew your food. Don't swallow large chunks of food. Stay away from fatty and spicy foods. Avoid sodas and drinks containing alcohol and caffeine. These foods can cause indigestion.

  2. Step 2

Lose excess weight. Carrying around extra pounds can push your stomach up, allowing acid to build up in your esophagus. Your doctor can advise you on what your ideal weight should be.

  3. Step 3

Stay physically active. Take a brisk walk or go on a bike ride. Regular exercise can aid digestion.

  4. Step 4

Reduce your symptoms with medication. Antacids can help minimize the discomfort caused by the buildup of stomach acid. Your doctor may prescribe antidepressants, antibiotics or prokinetics, depending on the cause of your indigestion.
