Step 1
Find out all your doggie daycare options. There are local, private pet sitters, doggie daycares, boarding kennels, canine clubs and informal playgroups. Check with local veterinarians, pet supply stores, the local animal shelters and other dog owners to get a complete list.
-
Step 2
Check out the doggie daycare websites and call to ask specific questions. Be sure to ask about their experience, routines, physical facilities, and emergency procedures. It is also best to ask about any issues specific to your pet at this time. For example, if your dog is particularly large, ask if there's a size limit, or a specific day for large breed play. If your dog has behavioral issues, make sure you let them know about these, too, and ask how they handle similar situations.
-
Step 3
Visit the top facilities or doggie daycare programs on your list. Make sure they have both indoor and outdoor play areas. Watch how the staff interacts with the dogs there, and find out what extra programs or services are offered. Some facilities offer grooming, training, or weight management programs. Be sure to walk right in to the kennel area at least once. A facility should never balk at you seeing the accommodations or asking questions. The best doggie daycares will offer you a full tour and all this information proudly.
-
Step 4
Let your dog visit for a test. Only plan to leave him for an hour or so, not all day. Notice how he reacts when you leave and return. Ask the staff how he did in your absence, listening for proof that they really were watching. If they tell you he was just fine and just slept, but you know your dog to be active and playful, that's a red flag. If they tell you he cried when you left, but settled down when he made friends with a new dog, you've found a good doggie daycare.
-
Step 5
Take advantage of bulk pricing and buy a doggie daycare package. Often you can purchase 20 visits in a block at a discounted rate. Then make doggie daycare part of your pet' s routine. He'll get to know the daycare facilities and his daycare friends, both the 2 and 4 legged ones. Then, when you need to leave your best friend for the day or overnight, he'll feel right at home, and you'll know he's getting the best doggie care.
