How to Renew an Expired Driver's License

The process to renew an expired driver's license varies from state to state. Some renewals can be done online or by mail. However, if you let your license expire by over a year, some states may have you take a road test, which will require you to visit your local Department or Bureau of Motor Vehicles (DMV/BMV). Some states will also charge a late fee in addition to a renewal fee. If your license expires, it's best to take care of it as soon as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Open an Internet browser and navigate to www.dmv.org. This site provides DMV information for drivers all around the United States.

    • 2

Choose your current state of residence on the map and wait for the next page to load.

    • 3

Find and click "Renewing your license." On the next page locate the paragraph that says "Expired License."

    • 4

Read the instructions. Indiana, for example, has a $5 fee for an expired license on top of the renewal fee. Since Indiana does not have an online renewal option, you would have to go to a local BMV and take with you the required items to renew your license. Those items necessary will be listed on the site.

    • 5

Visit the BMV; an appointment is not necessary. Tell the clerk you are there to renew an expired license and follow their instructions. If your license has been expired for two years you will have to take a written test. If more than three years, you will have to take a driving test. A vision test is also required for all renewals, expired or not.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to bring the required items with when renewing your expired license, otherwise the BMV will not be able to help you, and you will have to leave, get the items and come back. Make sure to check when your license expires, most are good for four years. Most states also send out an expiration notice.

  • You may be ticketed by a police officer if you are pulled over and show an expired license.
