How to Change a DNS Record

Whenever you purchase a domain name, you are provided with a set of DNS (Domain Name System) numbers that allow your website to be viewable. If you purchased your domain name and web hosting from the same company, you don't have to worry about changing the DNS records. However, if your domain name is from a different provider than your web host, you will have to enter your DNS numbers into your web-hosting account. Failing to change your DNS records will cause your website to be inaccessible to website visitors.

Instructions

    • 1

Retrieve your new DNS numbers for your domain name by logging in to your registrar account. The registrar will be the company that you purchased your domain name from. The DNS numbers will be two series of numbers. For example "ns1.01.02.03" and "ns2.01.02.03." Log out of your registrar account after you have obtained the DNS numbers.
