How to Apply Vinyl to a Car

Applying vinyl car graphics to cars is not as difficult as one may think. Vinyl graphics come in a variety of designs and can add aesthetic "spark" to your vehicle without the major expense of a new paint job. When applying vinyl graphics, the easiest method is to use the "wet" method, which through the use of soap and water allows you to slowly place the vinyl decal on the car and move it around a bit until you get it just right. The wet method is preferred for beginners, since mistakes can be made and fixed without bodywork.

Instructions

    • 1

Thoroughly wash the area in which you will place the graphic and dry with a microfiber towel. All dirt, dust and grime need to be removed in order for the decal to adhere properly.

    • 2

Fill the spray bottle with water and then place one drop of dish soap in as well. Spray a light layer of this mixture on the car where the vinyl is to be applied.

    • 3

Pull the paper backing off the vinyl and spray a light layer of the soap mixture on the sticky area.

    • 4

Place the vinyl, sticky side down on the car. You can now move the vinyl graphic around as is needed, since the soap mixture will keep it from sticking. Once the vinyl is placed to your liking, run the squeegee over it several times to displace water and air from beneath the graphic.

Allow the graphic to dry for at least 24 hours before driving the car.

Tips & Warnings

  • If a squeegee is unavailable, you can use a credit card to squeeze air from beneath the vinyl graphic.
