Rosemary hot oil treatment for hair

Rosemary and hot oil hair treatments have become a popular way to add luster, softness and color to hair. Rosemary has a long history of use to darken and strengthen hair. Olive oil is a traditional hair smoother and strengthener. When you put them together, you have a treatment that can make your hair longer, stronger, darker and more lustrous.

A salon hot oil treatment can easily cost as much as a week's worth of groceries. Even a commercially prepared rosemary hot oil treatment can be expensive - and you can't be certain of the quality of the ingredients or the preparation. One way to be sure that your hair is getting the best treatment is to make rosemary hot oil treatments at home yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8-10 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • metal saucepan
  • strainer lined with cheesecloth
  • plastic wrap
  • hot towel
  1. Step 1

    Prepare the rosemary for use.

Strip the needle-like leaves from each rosemary sprig by running your fingers down the stem. Chop the leaves finely with a sharp knife. Using a sharp knife will help avoid bruising and crushing the leaves.

  2. Step 2

Add the chopped rosemary to the olive oil in a small saucepan. Stir the leaves in with a plastic or wooden spoon.

  3. Step 3

Heat the olive oil and rosemary over low heat until it is slightly warmer than skin temperature.

Keep in mind that your scalp is more sensitive to heat than your hands are. The best way to test the temperature of the olive oil is to dribble a drop on the inside of your wrist just as you would test baby formula.

  4. Step 4

Strain the hot oil through a cheesecloth-lined strainer to remove the leaves. Press lightly to extract all the oil from the mixture.

  5. Step 5

Put towel in dryer or on radiator to warm.

  6. Step 6

Apply to hair with fingertips, starting at scalp and working through to the ends. Massage lightly into the scalp for a minute to stimulate the nerve endings and hair follicles. Make sure to coat all strands of hair.

  7. Step 7

Wrap hair in plastic wrap, then in the heated towel and relax for 15-20 minutes.

  8. Step 8

Wash hair with gentle shampoo until all oil is removed. It usually will take two lather-and-rinse cycles before hair is oil-free.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never leave oil over flame unattended.
