How to Care for Skin After Using a Tanning Bed

Save

Your skin is extremely vulnerable after tanning in a tanning bed. The two major concerns that you'll have after using a tanning bed is keeping your skin healthy and maintaining your tan. Keeping your skin in good condition while tanning will not only prolong your tan, but it will also help to prevent damage to your skin, which could lead to health problems in the future.

Things You'll Need

  • Aloe vera
  • Loofa
  • Mild body wash
  • Sugar scrub
  • Deep moisturizing lotion
  • Tanning lotion made for a tanning bed

Keep Your Skin Healthy

Before going to the tanning bed, take a shower and clean your skin well with the loofa and mild body wash, such as Johnson's Body Wash. A mild body wash works best because it's gentle on your skin and does not have any properties which would leave a film on your skin. Scrub gently with the loofa to get rid of any dead skin cells. Apply a tanning lotion made for use in a tanning bed. Many tanning salons and other retail outlets carry a wide selection of lotions made for use in tanning beds. If you burn easily, make sure that you pick a tanning lotion with a small amount of sun block and stay in the tanning bed for only the recommended amount of time.

Allow your tan to set for a minimum of 4 hours before you take a shower or add any lotion to your. To get the maximum benefit from your tanning bed session, allow the tanning lotion to remain untouched on your skin for several hours after your tanning session. Washing the lotion off of your skin or taking a shower immediately after tanning can result in a lighter, uneven tan.

Take a shower a minimum of 4 hours after your tanning bed session. While in the shower, use the sugar scrub evenly over the area where you have tanned. Using a sugar scrub rather than a salt scrub will give your skin more moisture and will give your skin a nice glow while removing any dry skin which will keep your skin from drying out or peeling. Do not rub the scrub in to any areas that became sunburned during your session. If you have any sunburned areas, clean them gently with the mild body wash to remove the tanning lotion.

Cover your skin with deep moisturizing lotion immediately after leaving the shower. Use the aloe vera gel on any areas that are sensitive or sunburned first, and then apply the lotion. The aloe vera will assist the sensitive areas of your skin in healing at a faster rate. Applying deep moisturizing lotion keeps your skin healthy and extends the life of your tan, allowing you to go longer in between tanning bed sessions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drink water before and after your tanning session. Keep your skin moisturized. If you feel it getting dry or itchy after tanning, apply more deep moisturizing lotion. If you have a sunburned or sensitive area after tanning, do not have another tanning bed session until that area is healed.
  • Overuse of a tanning bed can cause the same UV damage as tanning in the sun for too long. Only stay in the tanning bed for the recommended amount of time and do not exceed 20-minute tanning sessions. If you burn easily in the sun, you will burn easily in a tanning bed. Use a lotion with a small amount of SPF protection to avoid sunburns. Remove contact lenses before tanning in a tanning bed and make sure to cover your eyes with protective lens. If your tanning salon doesn't provide these, you can purchase them for a small amount at a number of retail outlets.
