Coronary artery disease is a condition in which the arteries of the heart become blocked, making it difficult for blood to flow to the heart. The blockage is caused by the buildup of fatty deposits. Symptoms of this disease are most noticeable when a person is experiencing physical or emotional stress. Coronary artery disease can be cause by other health conditions including diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. A person with coronary artery disease is at an increased risk of heart attack.

    How to Self-Test for Coronary Artery Disease

  1. Step 1

    Pay attention to any pain in your upper body. Your chest might feel tight, as if something is pressing down on it or squeezing it. Your chest might also feel like it is burning or numb. Women may experience severe pain in the arm, abdomen or back.

  2. Step 2

    Notice your breathing. Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath is a symptom of coronary artery disease.

  3. Step 3

    Evaluate signs of indigestion. This might include feeling like your stomach is full. You may also feel nauseated or start vomiting.

  4. Step 4

    Observe your energy level. Fatigue, lightheadedness or weakness can also be caused by coronary artery disease.

  5. Step 5

    Keep track of how long your symptoms last. If they persist for more than five minutes, get emergency medical help right away.
