Everyone in or considering joining the work at home industry needs to consider the viability of what they have planned and a business plan is a perfect way to accomplish this even if you will not need to obtain funding from an outside source.

A business plan is more than a means of formalizing your business's goals. It's a way to gauge your progress in turning your dreams into reality. Writing a work at home business plan for yourself doesn't have to be complicated, it doesn't have to adhere to the SBA guidelines or even pass muster at the bank but it has to be written to help you establish a better understanding of the industry and your accomplishments within it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand what is included in a Business Plan Part 1. A typical business plan includes the eight different sections described below. Just reading through this list will help you to understand each component and how a work form home business plan will benefit you.

An Executive Summary which should be fairly straight forward if you will be working from home on your own. You just need to tell the readers of your work at home business plan what you will be including in your business plan. Ask yourself what you want to say and keep it short and sweet.

A Company History which might seem odd to write for a startup business but it's important because even your work from home idea came from something or someone.

An Industry Description that includes a summary of where your business will fall within the industry. Researching major players in the Work From Home industry is possible but be sure to watch for the “These Results are Not Typical” warnings before including them in your industry description.

The Market Analysis part of your work form home business plan needs to include not how you will market your business but the who and where of your potential customers. Knowing that a lot of work from home businesses are internet based your market may be global or you may concentrate your business within a specific geographic area. You will also want to include the basic demographic group that will utilize your work from home services or product.

Now Competitive Analysis is something that you will really want to do some research on. Who will be your competition? How will you take business from them? How much business is available to be obtained in your chosen work form home business.

The Marketing Plan of your business plan is a complete over view of your proposed strategies that will include advertising and pricing not only of your marketing but of your product too. For a work form home business owner you will also want to quantify the amount of time you will dedicate to social media marketing, it is the computer age where all kinds of promotion needs to be considered and budgeted.

A Management Plan is a summary of who will be doing what for your business. You may even want to include any mentors or affiliates that you plan on or have obtained in this section if you plan on managing your own work at home business.

  2. Step 2

Understand what is included in a Business Plan Part 2. I've broken the understanding portion of this article into two sections to help you to comprehend exactly what to plan on writing.

Some work at home business plans will have a pretty easy Operating Plan, which is a summary of how your your product is produced and where it is produced and what type of suppliers you will be utilizing. The basic operation that is completed to get your money in the door.

If you are not comfortable with a Balance Sheet, an Income Statement or a cash flow statement you may want to obtain assistance when preparing the Financial Plan part of your work at home business plan. Or at the very least follow an example of a properly completed set of financial documents. This is really the most important part of the plan to me. If you are going to be paying for advertising, mentoring, supplies, internet service, computer equipment etc. You need to know that you are going to be turning a legitimate profit when you reach a certain volume. Your break even point needs to occur before your breaking point.

  3. Step 3

Find Examples or Templates to utilize in writing your Business Plan. Thousands if not hundreds of thousand of reputable businesses and writers offer examples of completed business plans today. They are easy to find at your local book store, library or on the internet. You may even have a business plan template preloaded in one of your software programs on your computer. They are not hard to find but be sure to locate one that really gives you the in depth information behind the research needed to complete a business plan that works for a the work from home industry. You may even find a work from home business that provides assistance in completing the plan as well as examples to follow. It's a unique market with a great support system already build in so utilizing their services could bring about a great head start for you.

  4. Step 4

Write a Great Work from Home Business Plan but Keep it Real. I love to see graphics and goals and dreams included in a business plan but you will be utilizing this plan for years to come to gauge your progress, your success, your dedication to your work from home endeavors so please take the time to do the research and do it right without fabrication. The research you do over the next month to complete your work form home business plan is well worth the effort. It could be used for growth related financing or even franchising. Think of the success that you plan on achieving and the hours you will be dedicating to this business and know that you deserve the facts in writing today.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using a template or example be sure to customize everything for your business. A business plan that is copied word for word does you no good...
