Dogs are important members of our families. Tell your dog just how much you love her by making these homemade dog treats that are sure to please even the pickiest of palettes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

In a medium saucepan, bring 4 c. of water to a boil and add ½ of a chicken breast (or equivalent). Allow to boil for 1 hour adding enough water to cover chicken as needed. Do NOT add salt.

  2. Step 2

Drain chicken. Set aside the broth and shred 1/8 c. of the boiled chicken.

  3. Step 3

In a large bowl, combine 1 c. cornmeal, 2 c. wheat flour, 6 tablespoons oil, 1 c. chicken broth, and 1/8 c. shredded chicken. Stir until well mixed.

  4. Step 4

Place the dog treats dough on a flat surface and roll out until 1/3-1/2” thick.

  5. Step 5

Use bone shaped cookie cutters to cut out dog treats. Place on cookie sheet.

If you do not have bone shapes, simply cut into sticks or drop half dollar sized pieces on a cookie sheet. (The dogs won’t know the difference.)

  6. Step 6

Bake dog treats at 350 degrees for 25-35 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Store in an airtight container for 7-10 days… if your dogs haven’t already eaten them by then.

Tips & Warnings
  • When purchasing chicken, look for organic or all natural, hormone free chicken as it is better for your dog’s health.
  • No time to boil your own chicken? Look in the health food section of your grocery store for a low sodium broth that does not contain tomatoes or onions. (Salt, tomatoes and onions are all harmful to dogs.)
  • Have extra broth? It can easily be frozen in ice cube trays to be used in future dog treat recipes or given as an extra special pup-cicle treat.
