How to Care for Frye Boots

Frye boots have been worn by both cowboys and Hollywood celebrities. Founded by John Frye in 1863, Frye is the oldest operating shoe company in America. Frye's timeless designs come in both suede and cowhide leather. There are different techniques for cleaning each type of leather. Failure to properly care for Frye boots may result in damage, but with proper care, they can last for decades.

How to Care for Cowhide Full-Grain Leather Boots

1. Purchase the Frye leather conditioner, which is specially formulated to work best with Frye boots. The cream conditions and weatherproofs (though it doesn't waterproof) the leather.

2. Spread a small amount of the cream (about the size of a quarter) on a soft cloth. Rub the cream in circular sections in one area at a time. Reapply to each small section of the boot as it's conditioned.

3. Place wood shoe trees inside the boots. These will maintain the shape of your boots.

4. Allow the cream to dry overnight, and feel free to wear the boots the next day.

How to Care for Suede Boots

5. Purchase a suede protector spray meant specially for shoes and boots.

6. Rough up the nap of the suede boot gently with a wire suede brush. Work in small patches in a circular motion.

7. Spray the suede spray on your Frye boots, about 6 inches away.

8. Insert the wood shoe trees and allow the boots to dry before wearing.

Tips & Warnings

• Condition your leather or suede boots before you wear them for the first time. If dirt gets on your suede boots, allow the dirt to dry completely, then lightly brush it off with a suede brush. You can use a toothbrush instead of a suede brush.
• Don't rub leather conditioning cream on suede boots. It may ruin the grain of the suede. Don't wear your suede boots in the rain. The spray may help make the boots more water-resistant, but will not waterproof them.
