How to Encrypt a Text File
Documents on your computer containing sensitive information, such as your Social Security Number, credit card numbers, financial reports and legal forms can be coded to provide a higher level of security. This is called encryption. Encryption protects your documents by turning words into unreadable, garbled text if viewed by unauthorized eyes.

How to Encrypt a Microsoft Word Document

Open the MS Word document that needs encryption.

Go to the Tools menu at the top of the document. Click Options.

Click the Security tab.

Click the Advanced button in the "File encryption options for this document" section.

Choose RC4, Microsoft Strong Cryptographic Photographer.

Select Key Length (128bit or less).

Check the "Encrypt document properties" box and click the OK button.

Enter a password into the "password to open" field.

Click the OK button. Your document is now encrypted.

Tips & Warnings
Remember to save your password in a safe place. You will need it to reopen the document.
