How to Unpartition a Hard Drive

You need to unpartition a hard drive when you want to start completely from scratch or in preparation for selling or repurposing a computer. You must have administrator permissions to unpartition a drive. In Windows 7, your drive will be unusable until it is repartitioned with a new file system.

      Click the Start button.

      Type "disk management" into the search box.

      Click "Create and format hard disk partitions."

      Locate the hard drive you wish to unpartition in the list in the Computer Management window. Right-click its name.

      Select the "Delete Volume" heading from the context menu to start the unpartitioning procedure.

      Click the "OK" button in the warning dialog box that appears. This warning explains that unpartitioning the volume will result in all data on the drive being deleted.

  • Back up your data before unpartitioning your drive as all data will be lost.
