Step 1
Use the Magic Wand or Magnetic Lasso Tool to select an object. To use the Magic Wand, click on the tool in the toolbar and click on the image that you would like to convert. In some instances, the Magic Wand will automatically draw a path around the object for you. Sometimes, the Magic Wand has a difficult time determining the edges of an object, so if the Magic Wand doesn't work, you will need to trace the object with the Magnetic Lasso Tool until the entire object is enclosed in a path.
-
Step 2
Click on the "Paths" work palette, and choose "Make work path from selection." The button appears as a circle with lines coming out from it. When you click this selection, a copy of the path of your image will be made.
-
Step 3
Go to "Export." "Export" appears under the file menu. Select the "Paths to Illustrator" option to save the path. This will bring up the "Export Paths" window.
-
Step 4
Name the file if you want it to have a different name than the original graphic. The default will be the original file name. The "Save as type" will default to Adobe Illustrator (.ai). This is correct. Click "Save."
-
Step 5
Open the file and clean up the paths. Especially if you relied on the Magic Wand Tool for your object selection, your image will have some rough edges. You will need to use the "Path Selection Tool" to smooth these lines out as much as possible.
