Instructions

  1. Determining the Cause of Nerve Damage

    • 1

      Identify the source of the nerve damage. It may stem from a previous surgical procedure, serious physical trauma, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases, or degeneration due to aging.

    • 2

      See a doctor. Whatever the source, if there is persistent pain or throbbing sensations anywhere in the body a doctor can address the nerve damage by employing any of the following solutions:
      * Having the patient correct any nutritional inadequacies
      * Regulating blood sugar in those who have diabetes
      * Recommending physical therapy
      * Recommending surgery for those who experience physical trauma
      * Prescribing medicine for those with autoimmune diseases

    • 3

      Get into a management regimen. Pain management is an important part of diminishing the discomfort caused by nerve damage. A doctor may prescribe pain relievers, antiseizure medications, or certain antidepressants to help quell the feeling of pain.

    • 4

      Take fat-soluble vitamins as they help to repair the myelin surrounding the nerves. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble and effective at treating damaged nerves. Eating protein-rich foods and leafy green vegetables is one way to get these vitamins, or they can be taken in the form of a vitamin supplement.

    • 5

      Along with taking any medicine prescribed by a doctor, there are alternative methods available to quell nerve pain. One of the most popular is acupuncture. Other methods include relaxation meditation and hypnosis.
