How to Make a Collect Call From a Cell Phone

Making collect calls is not the norm for mobile phone users, but some depend on it in an emergency or if the user is running low on minutes. However, cell-phone collect calls can be expensive. Make sure you know the per-minute rates and the terms and conditions of the collect call.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

  1. 1

Press "0" on your cell phone.

  2. 2

Dial the area code and phone number you wish to call.

  3. 3

Listen to the automated recording. The recording will usually tell you about the rate and terms, then prompt you to press "1" to accept. Usually at this time the recording will give you the option to speak to a live operator.

  4. 4

After accepting the recorded agreement, you will be prompted to speak your name after the tone. Once completed, the call will go through to the receiving line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you enter the area code, even if it is in the same area code from where you're calling. There are 1-800 alternatives that are usually less expensive than the rates required by your mobile phone providers. Two examples: 1-800-CALL-4-LESS (1-800-225-5453), 1-877-3G-COLLECT (1-877-342-6553).
  • Beware of the rates. Per-minute rates can be especially high when making a collect call to another state or country.

Another posibility is that they will refer to receiving a text message following the call. The charges will appear as an SMS "premium" text message on your next bill, usually in the amount of $9.99 for up to 20 minutes talk time. The two numbers listed as alternatives are also expensive and will ask you to send in a check or go to a web site to pay. you will receive constant reminders for payment if you dont pay.
True "collect" calls to cell phones are not currently available as to this day, the wireless companies have not agreed to allow these types of charges to be placed on a wireless subscribers bill
