Using a pocket knife is a skill every outdoors enthusiast, hunter and angler should possess. For a youngster learning to live and work independently, receiving that first pocket knife is a rite of passage. Follow these steps to learn how to handle a pocket knife safely.

From Quick Guide: Pocket Knives 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sharpening stone Light machine oil
  1. Step 1

Open the knife safely by gripping the handle in one hand and grasping the blade with the index finger of your other hand beneath the blade, pressing your thumbnail in the blade indentation to help you grip the blade. Pull outward in one movement, with the sharp edge of the blade away from fingers and the palm of your free hand, until the blade locks into place.

  2. Step 2

Hold the knife handle so that the blade is turned away from your body.

  3. Step 3

Cut, whittle or slice with the knife in a consistent motion, moving the blade away from your body and into the material being cut. Never peel, slice or whittle with the sharp edge of the blade moving toward you.

  4. Step 4

Close the pocket knife by holding the handle firmly in the tips of your fingers and using the thumb and index finger of your free hand to hold the blade on the outside edge. Fold the knife in on itself and let the sharp edge of the blade snap into the closed position, making sure your fingers are not near the blade.

  5. Step 5

Store the knife in a protective sheath or place in your pocket until needed.

  6. Step 6

Clean your pocket knife periodically with a dry, lint-free cloth and a small quantity of machine oil. Placing few drops on the hinge mechanism of the blade will keep the knife well-lubricated and ready for years of service.

  7. Step 7

Sharpen your knife with a sharpening stone by placing the cutting edge lightly and at a slight angle on the stone, and drawing the blade away along the stone in a series of quick movements.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your fingers away from the sharp end of the blade and the holding receptacle inside the handle, especially when closing the knife.
