How to Upgrade Photoshop CS2

One truth that all graphic designers and layout artists know is that you can count on seeing a new version of Photoshop released on a fairly regular basis. The first version of Photoshop (1.0) came out in 1990. CS2 came eight versions later as 9.0. You can either upgrade to the next version, which is CS3, to CS4, or go directly to the most recent CS version that is available on the market. Purchasing the upgrade is less expensive than buying the entire program.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your hard drive to ensure that you have enough available space to accommodate this upgrade. Most Adobe Photoshop upgrades after CS2 will recommend that you have at least 1 GB of hard disk space available. You should also have at least 512 GB of RAM to handle the program when it's running.

    • 2

Purchase the newer Photoshop version that you want on your computer. Evaluate the features of CS3 and CS4 (or the most recently released Adobe version available) to decide which ones you will likely use on a regular basis. See "Resources" below for a comparison chart.

    • 3

Close the CS2 program. Download the new version to your computer instantly, or have the program shipped to you on a disk. You do not have to delete the older CS2 version.

    • 4

Complete the upgrade wizard. Choose the default options (recommended and already selected) unless you are very familiar with custom options for this program. You can always go back and reinstall additional features later. Restart your computer to complete the download.

    • 5

Register your new Photoshop version once it's installed. This is optional, but it will allow you easier access to special deals and updates from Adobe.

    • 6

Click the newly placed Adobe Photoshop icon on your desktop or under "Program Files" on your main hard drive. Delete the old CS2 Photoshop icon to minimize confusion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adobe upgrades are available for both Macs and PCs---be sure that you are getting the right version.

  • When you upgrade Photoshop CS2, the older version will usually remain installed on your PC as a backup option.

  • If you are just learning Photoshop, get a student edition, which is offered at a deep discount as compared to the professional version.

  • Download a free trial version of the new Photoshop program that you want to upgrade to at Adobe.com first if you're undecided. You can then purchase the upgrade and enter your new serial number to get permanent access to the program.
