How to Make a Rice Bran Oil Soap

Save

Rice bran oil soap is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, which are necessary to promote healthy skin. While the soap is difficult to find in your local grocery store, you can make a rice bran oil soap at home for little cost. Plus, you can add your own scent or other additives.

Things You'll Need

  • 14 oz. of Rice Bran Oil
  • 10.6 oz. of Coconut Oil
  • 10.6 oz. of Palm Oil
  • 5 oz. of Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)
  • 12.35 oz. of Water
  • 30 drops of Fragrance Oil (optional)
  • Additives (optional)
  • Plastic Pitcher
  • Large Pot
  • Soap Mold
  • Pour the water into a plastic pitcher or other large container and then add the lye to the water. Set this aside to cool, as the lye can get very hot when mixed with water.

  • Place all the oils into a large pot and heat on low until they are melted. Remove the oils from the heat. Add the lye water to the oils and stir until trace has formed. Trace forms when the oil and lye mixture becomes thick and creamy, similar to mashed potatoes.

  • Add the fragrance oil and additives to the soap mixture after trace has formed. If you prefer an all-natural soap, you could leave it plain or use only essential oils for fragrance.

  • Pour the rice bran oil soap into a mold and allow it to sit for 24 hours.

  • Remove the soap from the mold and place it in a cool, dry area to cure for 2 to 3 weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always remember to wear proper safety equipment when working with Sodium Hydroxide. You should have safety googles, rubber gloves and protective clothing.
