How to Increase Low Platelets

Low platelets, or thrombocytopenia, can cause excessive bleeding or other side effects. Therefore, it can be important for people with thrombocytopenia to try to increase their platelet count. Although some people with low platelet count should just be monitored, others should take more drastic measures to raise their platelet count to a normal level.

    Instructions

      • 1

Monitor your platelet count. This requires drawing blood periodically to estimate the number of platelets in your blood. Your doctor will make decisions about how to increase your platelet count based on the results.

      • 2

Make sure to discontinue any drugs that can cause low platelet count, including heparin.

      • 3

Ask your doctor about taking steroids or intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) to slightly impair the immune system. This will be beneficial if your immune system is attacking your body's platelets, but it will not be beneficial if the low platelet count is caused by other factors.

      • 4

Discuss the option of a platelet transfusion with your doctor if your platelet count drops very low, or if you require surgery while your platelet count is low. This treatment does carry severe side effects, however, so weigh the pros and cons carefully before undergoing a transfusion.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Ask your doctor about discontinuing the use of aspirin or other blood thinners.

    • Make sure to share your concerns with your doctor. Do not accept treatment unless you understand the risks and benefits of the treatment.
