How to Donate Exercise Equipment

Save

Old exercise equipment sitting in the garage or unused in the living room could give someone else a much-needed tool to become healthier. There are many ways to donate equipment. You can give it to your friends or a local church, or you can contact several organizations that need exercise and sporting equipment.

How to Donate Exercise Equipment

  • Gather your equipment together and clean it. Call the Salvation Army or Goodwill, and arrange for a pick-up if you want to do a general donation. Otherwise, you can donate to specific causes or people by following one of the steps below.

  • Call your local Boys and Girls Club and ask them if they need any exercise equipment. Go to their website to find a club near you. See the References section below for their website.

  • Contact I Love Schools to see a list of specific requested items by local schools. Click on the "Teacher's Wish List" link on their website, and fill out the Search form. See "Where to Donate" in the References section below for the website.

  • Contact Sports Gift, Inc. to donate your equipment to underprivileged children around the world. Click on the "Donate Sports Equipment" link on their website, and browse the list on needed items. Ship the items to Sports Gift, 32545 B Golden Lantern, #478, Dana Point, California 92629, or drop them off at the Laguna Hills Office at 26072 Merit Circle, Suite 121, Laguna Hills, CA 92653. See "Where to Donate" in the References section below for their website.

  • Place an ad in the free section of Craig's List or on The Freecycle Network to give to someone locally. Click on the Freecycle Network's "Browse Groups" link on their website, and then click on your state and city to be taken to a local group's homepage. Sign up for a free membership, and then place an ad for the items you wish to donate. Coordinate a pick-up time with an interested party. See "Where to Donate" in the References section below for their website.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to get a dated receipt for tax write-off purposes. The receipt must be signed, dated and include a list of the items donated with their estimated value.
