How to Create a TXT File

Text (TXT ) files comprise a sequence of lines ended with a special character called "end-of-file" (EOF). Txt files usually contain a plain human readable text. These files have a default extension ".txt" but are often assigned other extensions too. The Notepad text editor, which comes with Windows XP/Vista, provides a simple way to create TXT files.

      If you use Windows XP, click "Start" then "Run." Type "notepad" and press "Enter." If you use Windows Vista, click "Start," then "Search." Type "notepad" and press "Enter." A Notepad editor window should appear.

      Type a desired text in the editor window. You can leave it blank as well.

      Click the "File" menu and choose "Save As" to open the "Save" window.

      Type any name in the "File Name" field. The extension ".txt" is already given in the field. Browse to a folder where you want to place the file and click "Save."
