Popular media icons sport sequin headbands on the red carpet or on outings to hot nightclubs in the city. Copy their high style by making your own sequin headband with a few simple steps. These sparkly accessories can also be used for dance troupes, dress up fun or theater and Halloween costumes.
Things You'll Need
- Elastic sequin fabric
- Sewing needle
- Fabric glue or hot glue gun
- Sequin flower applique
Purchase a length of elastic sequin fabric long enough to wrap around your head comfortably. Sequin elastic comes in many styles, colors and widths. For a headband fashion accessory, fabrics one inch wide or narrower are ideal. Any color or sequin pattern is ideal for this project. A sequin flower, or other design, applique can also be found at a fabric or craft store. This embellishment is optional.
Wrap the sequin material around your head where you intend to wear the headband. Stretch it slightly so it stays on your head without binding too tightly or slipping off over your hair. Cut the fabric two inches longer than this length and lay it out flat with the sequin side down on a table.
Fold the very ends of the sequin strip over and use glue or a needle and thread to hold them in place. This will prevent sequins from falling off the end of the strip or the fabric from fraying. Allow any glue you used to dry completely before continuing with the sequin headband project.
Use needle and thread to stitch the folded over ends of the headband fabric together. Be sure to sew it in the correct spot to get the same fit you achieved before you cut the fabric. Since the sequin headband will be under some strain, sew with a double length of thread and make small, close stitches to make the seam stronger.
Attach the sequin flower applique to the headband either at the front, smooth side or directly over the seam to hide it. There are many different types of sequin patches and appliques that can be used for a sequin headband accessory. While this is optional, it is fun to augment the stylish headband with more decorations. You can even attach a safety pin to the back of various appliques and pin them to the sequin headband to change the style.
