Treat a Tattoo Infection

Time is of the essence if you end up having to treat a tattoo infection if you want to preserve your tattoo and prevent scarring. Here are some treatments you can follow to clear up any minor infections.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the infected area around your tattoo clean. Wash the area with a clean hand using antibacterial soap and warm water. Pat it dry using a clean fuzz-free cloth.

    • 2

Keep it uncovered. You don't want anything to further aggravate the infected tattoo but you don't want to promote any further breeding of bacteria. If you do opt to cover it use sterile gauze coated in an antibiotic cream or ointment and change it frequently.

    • 3

Apply a layer of antibiotic ointment over the infected area twice daily. Repeat daily until the tattoo infection clears. If the infection persists and shows no signs of healing within a few days or appears to be eating away at the skin then you will want to move on to step 4.

    • 4

Schedule an appointment with your physician so that you can be prescribed antibiotics. Take your antibiotics as prescribed for the entire duration that they are prescribed to treat a tattoo infection. Just because the infection appears to have cleared up does not mean that it has and stopping your antibiotics early can allow it to come back even stronger and now resistant to the medicine.

Tips & Warnings

  • If possible talk to the original tattoo artist as they can best tell you the severity of the infection and the best course of treatment.
