How to Cure Dysentery

Amoebic dysentery is an intestinal infection caused by a microorganism known as an amoeba. It is usually contracted by drinking contaminated water, often in tropical areas, or consuming foods such as fruits or vegetables. It typically causes severe, bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps, and in its most potent form, can even result in death. To treat amoebic dysentery, a visit to a doctor and prescribed medication are usually recommended. Here are steps to follow to detect the presence of and to treat dysentery.

  1. How to Treat Amoebic Dysentery

    • 1

Watch for symptoms. The classic symptom of dysentery is bloody diarrhea, particularly if you reside in or have traveled to a tropical region. Stomach cramps can also appear as a milder symptom.

    • 2

Make an appointment with a doctor to have a stool analysis performed. The doctor may recommend additional testing procedures such as ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis.

    • 3

Take any medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. A common drug administered to treat dysentery is metronidazole, in adults taken as two 400mg tablets three times a day for five days. If a perforation of the intestinal wall has occurred, a hospital stay may be required.

Even if the symptoms subside, be sure to schedule a followup visit with your doctor to ensure the disease is completely gone from your system.

Tips & Warnings

  • If traveling to a tropical region, talk to your doctor about prescribing Metronidazole as a preventive measure. When drinking water in an area known for poor sanitation, boil the water for 10 to 15 minutes, allow it to cool rapidly and keep covered. Alternately, add purifying tablets.

  • When traveling in tropical countries, avoid consuming salads, unpeeled fruits and drinks containing ice cubes.
