If you follow the proper maintenance for a master link motorcycle chain and lubricate it every 300 to 350 miles, you will get the maximum life out of it. However, if the chain is at the point where it no longer retains stiffness and has too much play, you must install a new one. You can install the master link motorcycle chain relatively easily and as long as you know a few things about how the master link needs to be placed.
Things You'll Need
- Needle nose pliers
Run your new motorcycle chain, beginning on the top of the rear sprocket, in the direction that the chain will turn when in use. Make sure the two ends meet in a place where it is easy to get your hands in to install the master link.
Connect the two end links on your motorcycle chain by pushing the master link into place so that one pin of the link goes through the end of each end link.
Place the cap end of the master link over the pins where they stick through the other links.
Using a pair of needle nose pliers, install the locking circlip on the cap end with the closed end facing in the direction of the travel of the chain.
Tips & Warnings
- Assemble the master link on the chain before your install it on your motorcycle so you are familiar with how it works; this will make it easier when you do the actual installation and may not be able to see exactly what you are doing.
- Only install the chain length and type specified for your motorcycle. Using the wrong chain could cause it to break while you are riding.
