How to Replace a Truck Water Pump

The water pump sends the engine coolant to cool down the engine. Any problems with the water pump, like a failing pump seal or bad shaft bearings, can cause the truck to overheat, so the pump needs to be replaced. The procedure of removing and replacing a water pump is similar with most pickup trucks, but there can be differences from model to model, especially regarding which other components must be removed to access the pump.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Model-specific auto repair guide Clean container Flare-nut wrenches Fan/spanner wrench Strap wrench Water pump Gasket ATV sealant Engine coolant
  1. Step 1

Wait until the truck's engine is cool, then disconnect the truck's negative battery cable. Drain the engine coolant into a clean container by removing the plug under the engine block and then the radiator.

  2. Step 2

Remove the cooling fan and shroud. This can vary on each model, but it will include disconnecting the upper radiator hose and unclipping the air conditioning hoses from the fan shroud, then removing the fan and shroud's mounting bolts. You may need a fan wrench or spanner wrench for this.

  3. Step 3

Take off the drive belt by loosening the bolt on the tensioner and slipping the belt off the tensioner and pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley by unscrewing its bolts, using a pin spanner or strap wrench to keep the pulley from turning as you unbolt it.

  4. Step 4

Unbolt the water pump from the engine and remove it. You might need to tap it with a soft hammer to break the gasket seal. Clean off all traces of gasket material from the engine block and wipe the surface with a rag using acetone or lacquer thinner.

  5. Step 5

Connect a new gasket to the new water pump, applying a thin layer of ATV sealant to both sides of the gasket. Place the pump in position, tighten the bolts as hard as you can by hand, then finish tightening them with a wrench to their specific torque.

  6. Step 6

Re-install all other components, starting with the water pump pulley. To install the drive belt, push the tensioner up by hand and slip the belt back on the pulleys and tensioner the same way it was originally installed. Tighten the tensioner to the same tension it was before.

  7. Step 7

Refill the engine coolant to the truck's specified level; use fresh coolant if the old coolant is contaminated in any way. Reconnect the battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks around the pump and hoses.
