Clean a Clay Tile Roof
Clean a Clay Tile Roof

Clay tile is a beautiful and easy to maintain roof covering. Occasional maintenance is required but not nearly as much as with other types of roof coverings. In some areas of the world, tile can become covered by moss, algae and the like. In all parts of the world, dirt and debris can make the beautiful tiles look shabby. The biggest problem with cleaning a tile roof is that it is not recommended that you walk on the tiles. Here's how to clean the roof without getting on the tiles.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder that is long enough for you to easily reach roof level or slightly above Chemical sprayer (or a pressure washer with a chemical feed) Pressure washer Roof-cleaning chemical (check the resources section of this article for one that is friendly for use around plants)
  1. Step 1

Set the ladder in a position that will allow you to reach as much of your roof in one spray pattern as possible.

  2. Step 2

Mix the roof chemical in your chemical sprayer according to sprayer and chemical packaging directions. If you are using the chemical recommended in the Resource section of this article, the proper concentration is 3/4 cup of chemical to one gallon of water. You can also make a concentrate that feeds into your pressure-washer chemical feed to result in the same concentration being fed out of the nozzle.

  3. Step 3

Spray the roof chemical evenly onto the roof.

  4. Step 4

Allow the roof cleaning chemical to dry thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Pressure wash the roof at low to medium pressure to avoid breaking tiles. Rinse the roof until all the grime comes off.
