How to Paint Alloy Wheels
Alloy wheels look impressive when they are brand new and straight out of the box. But over time, they get dirty, pinged and scratched. Spruce up the wheels with a paint makeover and give your ride a brand new or totally different look. Paint the wheels all one color or do a stylish two-tone scheme, and you'll be the envy of all your motorhead friends.

Remove the tires from the vehicle and from the rims. If you don't have the tools to remove the tires from the rims, take them to a local garage or tire center and see if they will take them off for a small fee.

Scrub the wheels with a solution of warm water and mild soap. You can use a wire brush to remove dirt and grime. Rinse the wheels and make sure they dry completely.

Spray a light coating of primer paint over the wheel, using quick, back-and-forth sweeps. This technique will prevent the paint from "puddling" and dripping down the wheel. Repeat several times until the wheel is covered and none of the old surface shows through. Let dry thoroughly before painting.

Paint in one uniform color or by using a two-tone technique. Do not attempt to paint in colder temperatures or damp weather, because the paint will not adhere or dry properly. Follow the paint's directions for the best results. If you are doing two-tone painting (black on red is quite popular), using masking tape to mask off where the second color will be applied. Let the first color dry completely before moving onto the second color.

Once the painting is finished, go over the wheel with a top coat in the same manner, using swift strokes and several light coats. The top coat gives the wheel maximum shine and protection from the elements and makes cleaning easier.
