Ask anyone that knows me well and they'll tell you that I love to read books. I devour them! And one thing that has always caught my attention is the enormous free book collection of Project Gutenberg (see Resources below). Now, thanks to a free iPhone app called Stanza, I can get access to these and many other great free ebooks, on the go anywhere! You can too. Here is how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Download Stanza from the iPhone App Store. At the time of this writing, Stanza is free.

  2. Step 2

Tap "Online Catalog" to find more books besides the couple of sample books already downloaded for you.

  3. Step 3

On the next page you'll see a list of sources for books. Some of them are sources for newer, paid books such as O'Reilly, but we're looking for free books, so let's click Project Gutenberg.

  4. Step 4

The Project Gutenberg page lets you browse by popularity, author, genre and language. You can also do a search.

  5. Step 5

Click the "magnifying glass" icon to do a search. Enter your search term and tap "Search."

  6. Step 6

Once you have a list of books, click on a title to get more details.

  7. Step 7

The "Book Info" page will show you a picture, description and reviews if there are any. Click "download" to download the book to your phone.

  8. Step 8

To read your book go back to the first page of the Stanza app and hit Titles, Authors, Subjects or Latest Reads.

  9. Step 9

Reading a book is easy. You can tap the left or right hand sides of the screen to go to the previous or next pages. Tilt your iPhone to change between horizontal or vertical reading. Tapping the center of the screen will bring up a number of options including bookmarks and search.

  10. Step 10

Clicking on the "gear" icon will take you to a Settings page where you can change the font, font size, font color and background color.

    Happy reading!
