Static cling sticker decorations used to be the exclusive domain of little girls' rooms. However, as more and more people decide to give their own home design a try, these stickers have expanded in use and popularity because they can give the look of elaborate stenciling and design while being totally removable. If you are considering stenciling your walls or painting elaborate designs in any of your living areas, consider decorating your walls with stickers instead.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a theme. If you allow yourself to go wild when you see all of the sticker options that are available to you, then your room will likely not end up looking particularly coherent. Instead, decide ahead of time what kind of look you want. Do you want bold accents, or do you want your stickers to be subtle? Many wall stickers are designed to look as though they were sponged or painted into place. In general, these are best for use unless you are decorating a child's room and decide to opt for character stickers like Thomas the Train, Hannah Montana or Disney princesses.

  2. Step 2

Clean the walls. The stickers are fully removable, but they will lie flatter and look more professional if they are attached to a clean surface. Wipe down your walls with a barely damp rag. You can then wipe them down with a dry rag to avoid any moisture damage to the paint.

  3. Step 3

Start with a border. Borders are a great way to liven up a room without having to paint anything. Sticker borders are even better because you can easily change them if you get tired of them. Line the border up so that it is even with the line of the ceiling, then press it into place. Use another rag to smooth the border as you go to get rid of air bubbles underneath the sticker.

  4. Step 4

Put your quote into place. Sayings like "Live, Laugh, Love" and "Bless this Home" are popular quotes that are turned into sticker designs. These designs often have ornate lettering and are intended to look like painted calligraphy. These quotes look excellent over a mantle, on a bare wall in a kitchen or in the center of a group of family portraits. Use the laser level to make sure that you put the stickers up evenly, and put the writing at eye level or a little above so that people will be able to read it easily.

  5. Step 5

Add the accents. If your quote did not come with accents (most of them do), then you might want one or two additional sticker accents to work with the rest of the room. These can be butterflies that are arranged around the quote or an apple next to the lightswitch in the kitchen. Do not overdo the accents, or your room will end up looking like a child's bedroom instead of a beautifully appointed adult living area.
