Put Your Cell Phone on an Unlisted Number List

Traditionally, cellular phone numbers have not been included in telephone directories, unlike residential numbers. To keep your residential number from appearing in a phone book, you must call the phone company and ask for it to be unlisted. You do not have to do this for a cell phone number, as it will automatically not be listed in any phone book. However, a company called Intelius has gathered millions of cell phone numbers on its website and is willing to let anyone find someone's number for a fee of $15. In addition, many telemarketers buy cell phone numbers from companies such as sweepstakes or companies that place fake job ads. There are ways to protect your cell phone number.

How to Put Your Cell Phone on an Unlisted Number List

Step 1

Fax Intelius a copy of your driver's license. They only need to see your name and address, so black out all other information. Include a short note requesting all personal information be removed from their site. The fax number is (425) 974-6194.
Step 2

Add your number to the national "do not call" list. You can do this by visiting the link in the resource section. While it is actually illegal for telemarketers to call a cell phone, they may not realize your number is for your cell. Adding your number to this list will make sure that you don't receive any calls from telemarketers.
Step 3

Avoid giving out your cell phone number to just anyone. If someone is calling you, and you don't want them to, it is likely that they got your number through a friend rather than a list of numbers. Also, don't give out your cell phone number when entering contests or sweepstakes, as this is how many companies like Intelius get their lists of numbers.
Step 4

Block unknown numbers from your phone. Most phones have a way to do this. You can also block numbers after they call once.
Step 5

Report any harassing cell phone calls to local authorities, especially if they are ongoing. Also, talk to your provider and see if you can get a new number. They might be happy to help.
