Step 1
The first step in choosing the right laptop for college to buy depends on the major. If you or your child has an engineering or arts major, you probably need a laptop with at least a 2.5 GHZ processor to run the programs required by these majors. If all you or your child needs is a laptop to do word processing and surf the internet, you can skimp on a lot of things. You should be able to get by with a computer that has a 2.0 GHZ processor, 2 GB Ram, and a 100 GB Hard Drive.
-
Step 2
You do not need laptop for college that has a 19" or bigger screen. A 17" screen should be about perfect. Remember, you are probably going to be carrying this laptop from class to class so weight does become an issue.
-
Step 3
Make sure that the laptop for college has a good wireless internet card. Search what wireless standard is being used on campus. Some colleges are moving to integrate 802.11N. If this is the case at your college, make sure your laptop is 802.11N capable. However, most colleges still use 802.11G which is the standard wireless card found in laptops.
-
Step 4
If you are concerned with safety, make sure that your college laptop notebook has a Universal Security Slot (USS). These are slots to put in cables and locks to secure your laptop.
-
Step 5
A good computer virus removal and protection program should also be a top priority. Most college networks are open and plagued with viruses searching for unprotected computers. A good virus removal software program should protect your college laptop from any potential viruses on the network.
