A regular bicycle can easily be turned into a stationary bicycle using a bike trainer. It even allows for you to adjust the resistance and is relatively inexpensive: At $40 to $250 it is cheaper than an actual stationary bicycle!

Things You'll Need:

  • Bicycle Bike trainer Exercise Mat

How to Make a Stationary Bicycle

  1. Step 1

Lay the exercise mat down on a firm, level surface to prevent any of the equipment from damaging your floors.

  2. Step 2

Place the bike trainer squarely at the back of the exercise mat.

  3. Step 3

Put the rear wheel of your bicycle into the bike trainer and tighten the clamp around the rear axle. Spin the tire by hand a few times to make sure it is stable and not rubbing against the floor or the bike trainer.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the resistance. This step will be different for each bike trainer. Some create resistance with fluids, fans, or contact, but all are easily adjusted.

  5. Step 5

Mount the bicycle carefully, paying close attention to the stability. Begin to pedal slowly until you feel comfortable. Adjust the resistance as needed and continue with your bike ride!

Tips & Warnings
  • Without the wind blowing against your face like it does when you are riding outside it can be hard to motivate yourself on a stationary bicycle. Set up the bike trainer in front of the TV or looking out a window to keep yourself going strong.
  • Do not pedal so vigorously that the bicycle becomes unstable. The front tires are not stabilized with a bike trainer, so there is a risk that the bicycle will fall over if used improperly. Talk to your doctor before starting any exercise routine.
