How to Clear the Event Viewer

Microsoft Windows operating systems include an Event Viewer that records computer occurrences regarding security, hardware and software changes. Even though this maintenance helper manages details continually, you must clear it out occasionally because once the event log capacity is full, the Event Viewer stops recording. After you've reviewed incidents, you can back them up or delete them. The steps below will teach you how to clear the Event Viewer quickly, making room for the freshest logs of the day.

Highlight the desired log from the Microsoft Management Console listing.

    • 3

Select "Action" > "Clear All Events" from the toolbar menu.

    • 4

Select "Yes" to save the event log.

    • 5

Name your file and select "Text (tab delimited) (*.txt)" file as the "Save As Type." (Note: You can easily import this type of file into other applications later, should you decide to do so.)

Tips & Warnings

  • Notice the types of event logs that regularly become full and increase their log capacity. To do this, highlight a specific log and then select "Action" > "Properties." Go to the General tab and, under the "Log Size" section, click on the arrow next to "Maximum Log Size" to increase the capacity, which is measured in kilobytes.
