How to Create a Consumer Email Marketing Database

Email marketing is continuing to grow as one of the most widely used forms of outreach, promotion and communication for all kinds of business. Effective email marketing begins with the database of names you have to send your messages to. The quality and composition of the list will largely determine how successful the campaign will be. It is also of the utmost importance to comply with laws and best practices to avoid being marked as SPAM.

Instructions

  1. Building Your Email Database

    • 1

Sign up with a well-known email service provider. The ESP will be able to store your database of consumer names and addresses, as well as automatically handle list issues such as unsubscribing.

    • 2

Collect email addresses during all sale transactions. This will allow you to have a list of consumers and previous customers who may be interested in future promotions and sales.

    • 3

Place a sign-up sheet in your physical store if you have one. You will be able to quickly build a list of consumers who are interested in the types of products you sell.

    • 4

Find more email list members at conferences, trade shows, local events and even competitor's stores. Always be prepared to grab someone's email address who may be interested in your products or services.

    • 5

Add a sign-up form to your website. Offer something of value to your business's website visitors to get them to sign up for your list.

    • 6

Segment your list into different groups based on factors such as prospects, previous customers, buying history or location. This will allow you to send more specific messages out to different people.

    • 7

Clean the list from time to time, removing incorrect email addresses that result in bounces or get you marked as SPAM. This will improve your reputation and overall deliverability rate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Offering a person something of value to sign up for your list is the best way to find more list members. You can offer discounts, special promotions, exclusive access to something, weekly tip newsletters, eBooks or anything else.

  • Never purchase an email list from someone else or collect addresses found elsewhere on the Internet.

And please don't automatically add all your customers to a newsletter. Just that someone bought something from you doesn't mean that he wants your newsletter. If you offer a subscription option during a business transaction, then it has to be off by default.
