Visit your doctor to evaluate your situation and look for an underlying reason for your facial hair growth. Extra hair or unwanted hair may be the result of age, medical condition or genetics, and is not that uncommon. Your doctor may have medical suggestions to help you deal with the facial hair.

Seek out electrolysis treatment, which is the only permanent hair removal process. Electrolysis involves inserting a needle into each hair follicle and zapping it with an electric current to destroy the hair. This can be expensive and generally requires a series of treatments. If you have a pacemaker, you cannot use this treatment, notes the American Academy of Family Physicians

Use tweezers to pluck the unwanted facial hair. Plucking is one of the most common ways to remove facial hair and while it lasts longer than shaving, the hair will eventually grow back. To pluck, use a clean set of tweezers. Pull the skin taut and pinch the hair with the tweezers. Pull sharply to remove the hair. If redness occurs, apply ice or a cold compress after plucking.

Use facial wax to remove a larger area of hair. Buy a waxing kit and follow the instructions to use it at home, or make an appointment with a spa professional to have the waxing performed. Waxing can cause redness and irritation; if this happens, apply a cold compress to the affected area.

Use an epilator at home to remove facial hair. An epilator looks similar to an electric razor but removes the hair by pulling it from the root. Some commercial epilators combine elements of electrolysis and instead of pulling the hair by the root they sense moisture at the hair root and deliver an electric current to remove the hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hair follicles grow on an alternating system that runs three days. So do not be alarmed that if you have plucked today that you will have hair tomorrow. But plucking or tweezing is going to reduce the hair thickness and darkening.

  • When extracting hair it is not uncommon to get an occasional ingrown hair. It will look much like a pimple and will often time form a white head. If you remove the pus and see the hair remember to clean your skin thoroughly.
