Step 1
Leave him home when the heat index is high! Unless you absolutely need to take him with you somewhere - like to a vet appointment - the safest place for him to be is at home. If you DO take him out, never leave him in a car even with the windows cracked open. Just like small children, dogs can suffer from heat exposure if left in a parked car.
-
Step 2
Provide enough clean, fresh water for her to drink even when she's indoors.
-
Step 3
Don't leave him outside for long periods of time when it is extremely hot. If you need to leave him in the yard try to have a safe place for him in a shady area. Make sure he has access to plenty of water as well.
-
Step 4
Limit outdoor playtime when it's very hot. Dogs can become over heated so try to have several small playtimes instead of one long session.
-
Step 5
Check daily for fleas and ticks. These critters can cause illness in your pet ANY time of the year. It's a good habit to check your dog daily for fleas and ticks.
-
Step 6
Schedule a trip to the vet for any immunizations she is due for BEFORE boarding her when you go on vacation. Most kennels require it, but even if they don't make sure your pets shots are up to date.
-
Step 7
Don't let her drink beach water, interact with other animals or eat anything she may find when on the beach. Some dogs don't realize that salt water is not regular water (yes it DOES happen!) so keep a close eye on her when she's in any unfamiliar place.
-
Step 8
License & tag your pet to avoid him getting lost when you are away or if someone is watching him. It's easy for a dog to get lost. Having him properly tagged with your contact information - including a cell phone number - can help someone let you know they have found your pet.
