How to Remove the Factory Car Radio
If you are looking to install a new radio or stereo console in your car, you first need to remove the factory radio from the dashboard. The radio cannot simply be pulled out of the dashboard. Most manufacturers now include some security measures to mount and fasten the radio within the dashboard to prevent theft. The exact method used to secure the radio can vary depending on the make and model of the car.

1
Disconnect the cable on the car's negative battery terminal. Set the cable aside where it won't accidentally come back into contact with the terminal. Wait for at least three minutes after disconnecting the cable.
-
2
Remove the center bezel on the dashboard surrounding the console and radio. Depending on the model, this can have mounting bolts or another trim panel above it that needs removing first. Pry off the bezel with a trim stick and disconnect any electrical connectors (such as for the clock) that interfere with removal.

3
Unscrew the mounting bolts securing the radio within the dashboard. On some models (many of them made by Ford), the radio doesn't use bolts but clips. To release these clips, insert U-shaped tools into the holes on each side of the radio and then pull the unit out with the tools.

4
Pull the radio out of its mounting bracket to reach the connectors in the back. Disconnect all electrical connectors, then pull the antenna cable out of the unit. Remove the radio completely from the bracket and dashboard.

Tips & Warnings
If your radio is mounted with the lips that require the U-shaped tools, it is best to get tools specifically designed to help remove your model's radio. An audio specialist can supply these tools.
