Check out your local off-price retailer. You can find designer labels at off-price retailers at about 40 to 60 percent off. They don't usually carry the higher end brands but you can definitely find some designer jeans and handbags.

Join private sale communities. These are online groups that sell high-end fashion for up to 80 percent off. They have limited quantities and each designer is only available for a day or two so you have to check early and often. Most of these sites are invitation only. New boutiques come to these websites every day so the inventory stays fresh. Very popular designers sell out quickly, so it's best to check out the inventory as soon as the boutique is open.

Check out sample sales. If you are fortunate enough to live in or near a big city, sample sales are your friend. These are usually designer specific and are essential if you are interested in fashion but living on a budget. You can find dresses, bags, jeans, shoes and everything in between from all kinds of designers. Be prepared to be aggressive. The discounts are so good that some people are willing to tussle with you. Also, don't expect a fitting room. Most don't provide one so have a good idea of your size or dress so you can try things on.

Look for sales. Keep in mind that whenever really expensive stores have a sale or have items on clearance, things can go for as much as 70 percent off. These stores are usually smaller in size and have to get rid of clothing to make way for the current season's fashion. Don't be intimidated by the name of the store. If you see a clearance or sale sign at a high-end store, go right in. You might be surprised to find that the prices can work within your budget.
