Flat-screen computer monitors have the ability to display high-definition video just as normal HDTV would do. The only thing the monitor lacks is a tuner to receive and process the television signals or cable data. Using an extra computer monitor as a television can be much cheaper than buying a new HDTV.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tuner device compatible with component cables
  • Component, S-Video, or HDMI/DV video cables
  • VGA extension cable (if needed)
  • Monitor
  • Component-to-VGA converter
  • External speakers (Unless your monitor has built-in speakers)
  1. Step 1

Select a device with a tuner to use with your monitor. These devices typically include VCRs, cable boxes, DVRs and more. If you are capable of changing the channel with a device, then it has a built-in tuner.

  2. Step 2

Connect the video cable to your tuner device, and if you are using component cables, your monitor will probably require the converter to use them. You may also need to plug a VGA extension cable into the monitor for length.

  3. Step 3

Plug the component cable and the VGA cable into the component-to-VGA converter if needed. Component-to-VGA converters convert the signal so that it can be input into the monitor. Ensure that the converter is properly set up (see the converter's manual for more information). Component cables have five connectors (2 red, white, green and blue), where as S-video cables have a single round connection and HDMI cables look similar to large USB cables.

  4. Step 4

Connect your cable or antenna to the tuner device so the TV signals can be received.

  5. Step 5

Turn on both the tuner device and the monitor. Assuming the tuner device is set to a station you should be able to receive, you should have a picture now. If there is nothing on the screen, verify that the monitor is set to the proper input.

  6. Step 6

Connect the speakers to the audio component cables to enable sound.
