A WEP password is the 10 to 13 letter and number combination that protects a user's wireless connection. WEP protection can be disabled, however, anyone in range of the wireless network would be able to freely access it. With such an uncommon password, these codes can regularly get forgotten or misplaced. If this happens, there is a easy way to retrieve the WEP password so that the user can once again gain access to a wireless network.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open your computer's internet browser. You will likely see a message indicating that the browser cannot connect.

  2. Step 2

Type http://192.168.1.1. This is the same no matter what kind of Internet service you have.

  3. Step 3

Type your user id and password into the window that opens up after completing step 1. This is the username and password that you created when you first setup the wireless network. This is not the WEP password that you are trying to find.

  4. Step 4

Locate the button that will say either " Network Security" or "WIreless Security." This should be near the top of the browser window.

  5. Step 5

Write down the WEP protection password that is shown at the bottom of the screen and keep it in a safe place. This is the password that you will use to connect to your wireless network. You can also choose to check the box to disable the WEP protection. This is not recommended. However, it will gain you immediate access to your network. Be advised that is you disable your WEP protection, anyone in range will be able to access your wireless network.

  6. Step 6

Reset your wireless router if you were unable to log-in using your user id and password in step 3. If you have forgotten this password as well, locate the pin-sized push button at the back of your router. Hold the button in with a pen and release it after 20 seconds. This will reset the router back to its default settings. You will now be able to log-in to most wireless routers using the user id: Admin, and the password: 1234. However, some routers use "Admin" for the user id and then leave the password section empty. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to find your WEP password.
