Converting your Verizon Wireless contract phone over to a pre-paid Verizon Impulse plan is a very simple process . In fact, the entire process can be completed rather quickly with the help of a Verizon Wireless representative. However, there are several steps you'll want to verify along the way to ensure that the process is completed as smoothly as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if time still remains on your Verizon Wireless contract. If so, you may need to pay an early termination fee to disconnect the line. Verizon offers a pro-rated fee. Call Verizon customer service to find out. You can find the customer service number at the Verizon Contact Us link in Resources.

  2. Step 2

Remove the battery from the back of your phone. Under the battery, find your ESN number and write it down. While Verizon will already have the ESN on file, the company may ask you to provide it for verification purposes.

  3. Step 3

Compare Impulse plans by visiting the "Impulse plan comparison" (see Resources). Write down the plan you to which you would like to convert.

  4. Step 4

Call Verizon or visit an authorized Verizon Wireless location in your area. Tell the Verizon wireless representative that you would like to convert your contract phone over to the Impulse plan you have written down. You will have to agree to any early termination fees if your plan still has time remaining. Verizon will provide you with the fees amount. If no fees are required, the representative will initiate the change in account type for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Occasionally a representative may say she cannot change a device to a prepaid account. If you have been a good paying customer or if you have other lines active with Verizon, asking to speak to a customer service manager can usually solve this issue.
