Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Air filters, sized to fit
  • Upholstery cleaner, as specified by the manufacturer
  • Carpet shampoo machine
  • Carpet cleaning solution
  • Several boxes of baking soda, depending on room size
  • Vinegar
  • Paint primer
  • Paint and painting supplies

How to Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke Odor in Rooms

  1. Step 1

Remove all ashtrays from the room, and immediately stop smoking inside. Ashtrays full of ashes and butts will hold cigarette odor in rooms long after the last cigarette was smoked.

  2. Step 2

Replace the air filters in your home because they likely smell of cigarette smoke and will continue to spread the odor into every room in your home even after you stop smoking.

  3. Step 3

Wash or replace fabric window treatments, and clean upholstered furniture to remove lingering smoke odors. Make certain to carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions on your furniture before washing to avoid damaging your upholstery or voiding any warranties you might have.

  4. Step 4

Vacuum and shampoo all carpets. Throw rugs should be replaced, when possible. Check your warranty before shampooing your carpet. You may be required to have your carpets professionally cleaned to prevent voiding your warranty.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and leave it for three to four hours before vacuuming. Before trying this odor-removal technique, test a small area of your carpet by sprinkling some baking soda and letting it sit overnight. If the carpet fades or shows other signs of damage, do not apply the baking soda to the rest of the floor.

  6. Step 6

Clean your windows and screens with equal parts vinegar and water. Rinse screens well and place them in the sun to dry. This will speed drying and help remove any remaining cigarette smoke odor.

  7. Step 7

Prime and paint your walls. While this might seem like a lot of work, it will help get rid of cigarette smoke odor and hide any nicotine stains that have formed on your walls. If your walls are heavily stained, you should scrub them with a vinegar and water solution and allow them to dry before priming.

  8. Step 8

Place bowls of baking soda around the room and leave for several days. The baking soda should absorb any odor still lingering in the air. You may need to repeat this process several times to get rid of cigarette smoke odor in rooms completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Scented candles or room deodorizers only mask the smell of cigarettes. The odor will return when the candle burns out or the deodorizer is empty.
